A Rett syndrome awareness session was organised by the Rett Syndrome Pakistan at the National Museum on Thursday.
Titled ‘Blue Sky Girls’, the chief guest of the programme was Prof Ghaffar Billoo, who along with keynote speaker Dr Syed Athar Enam, said Rett syndrome was an X-linked neurological disorder on the autism spectrum, and one of only four diseases that occurred almost exclusively in girls.
“Though it is genetic, it is not hereditary, so parents have no idea their infant has this syndrome until between 6-18 months of age, when she unexplainably plateaus in development or suffers a devastating regression,” said Dr Enam.
Such conditions, the participants in the seminar were told, led to seizures, scoliosis and severe lifelong motor apraxia affecting speech, hand use, mobility and even the ability to eat or breathe easily for the rest of her life, they added. They said studies showed Rett syndrome might be reversible, making them believe it might be the first neurological disorder to be reversed at any age.
